Why twin studies? Heat and air pollution compound each other — and share causes. By running both studies on a shared monitoring network, each strengthens the other: one survey effort, two publishable datasets, and a single coherent evidence base for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and the National Clean Air Programme.

Reading a city's rivers, contaminant by contaminant.

CSF conducted a screening-level water-quality study of the contamination in the Nag and Pili rivers — sampling surface water across multiple points along the urban river course and benchmarking each pollutant against ecological and human-health thresholds.

The signal: a river under acute chemical stress.

Across every sampled location, the same pattern held — oxygen-depleting and toxic pollutants well above ecological screening thresholds. We ranked each contaminant by Risk Quotient (observed concentration ÷ safe benchmark).

Hydrogen sulphide emerged as the dominant ecological stressor — at a level associated with fish kills and benthic collapse — while dissolved oxygen sat below the threshold needed to sustain aquatic life. Exact concentrations are withheld until the study is published.

Bottom line: the combined pollutant load places these reaches below the lowest usable water-quality class — consistent with a sewage-dominated, ecologically compromised urban river in need of decentralized treatment, ecological zoning, and citizen oversight.

Fifty locally-built nest boxes, native fruit-bearing saplings, and school bird-watching kits seed an annual citizen bird census — turning neighbourhoods into long-term biodiversity monitoring sites.
