Module 01

The Keeling Curve, live.

Since March 1958, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii has measured atmospheric CO₂ continuously — producing the longest direct record of atmospheric carbon on Earth. The curve has only risen.

In May 2025 the seasonal peak crossed 430 ppm for the first time in over two million years. The pre-industrial baseline was 280 ppm.

More than 950 active Earth-observation satellites now circle the planet — measuring carbon plumes, surface temperatures, sea levels, vegetation health, and atmospheric chemistry in near real-time.

This is the data layer that makes modern climate science possible. Every wildfire, methane plume, and disappearing glacier is now visible from orbit.

Module 03

The El Niño cycle.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most powerful natural climate signal on Earth — a periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific that reshapes weather, fisheries, and agriculture across continents.

The 2023–24 El Niño was among the strongest ever recorded, helping push global temperatures past 1.5 °C for the first time on an annual basis.

The 10× carbon ecosystem.

Mangroves store up to ten times more carbon per hectare than terrestrial forests — buried deep in waterlogged sediment that locks it away for millennia. They also defend coastlines, nurse fisheries, and harbour extraordinary biodiversity.

Module 05

The sixth mass extinction.

For the first time in 65 million years, a single species — ours — is driving a global extinction event. Background extinction rates are running 100–1,000× faster than the geological norm.

The IUCN Red List now assesses more than 169,000 species, over 46,300 of which are threatened. Monitored vertebrate populations have declined an average of 69% since 1970.

Water on the edge.

WRI Aqueduct measures water risk on a fine grid across every river basin on Earth. The signal is stark: a quarter of the world's population lives under extremely high water stress, and 4 billion face severe scarcity at least one month a year.

Meanwhile, sea-level rise and intensifying storms push coastal flood exposure higher. By 2030, an estimated 1.6 billion people will live in 100-year flood zones.
